My soul is stricken with fear as red soaks into my shirt. Sticky fluids I should never feel on my skin run down my stomach. That beast that wounded me so stares at me with those eyes. Those eyes. So lifeless yet so terrifying. Red and cold they fill my being with regret. I should have been more careful eating a pomegranate. Now the stain will never get out of my shirt.

Stella had never been on a field trip before. Nothing fun like that ever happened at P.S. 103. Most days Stella’s school tablet sat untouched on her desk as she stared out the window, watching the usual red dust tumble over the horizon. But as she walked into class, she noticed a strange lady standing where Ms. Juno was supposed to be. This lady had a tight smile and looked funny. Not ugly or anything. It was her daily routine. She loved getting to the hangar early enough to make use of the light of the rising sun as she carefully polished and checked over her mecha. A couple of screws appeared to be working their way out from joints in the left arm, and she dutifully tightened them up. Once everything appeared ready, she keyed a command into the remote and the mecha started moving out of the hangar. She found it much easier to get to the cockpit when she had more room.
